The second Fishers of Men Legacy series tournament took place on June 28th at Lake St. Clair. While the turn out was rather disappointing, the event was not. For those not familiar with the legacy series, this is a adult/junior team format. This provided the perfect opportunity to introduce my daughter to tournament fishing. The evening meeting started with a meal and fellowship, after the rules were covered and blast off position determined, a raffle was held for several very nice sponsor packs. Cierra was one of the lucky ones to be drawn, and she could not contain her excitement for the gift pack. This is where the spark started. As soon as we got back into the truck she gushed with excitement about her prize and how nice everyone was. Included in the gift pack was a How to, provided by Strike King. She immediately began reading and read up until she went to bed, upon awaking at 4:30 the next morning, she started right back reading these helpful hints that she was sure would help us win.

The tournament was already a huge success and had not even begun yet. We were greeted with rain and chilly weather, but Cierra commented this is going to be a great day dad. With fear of storms, I chose not to run out in the lake, but stay close to the launch. This made for a tough day of fishing, but Cierra hung tough and fished hard all day. She managed to catch 4 fish, 1 keeper around 3 pounds and I was fearing she would be turned off by the long slow day, but around noon she told me this had been one her best days ever and hoped to fish many more tournaments. I tried to prepare her for the fact that we were not going to win to which she replied " who cares I can't wait for mom to see me weigh in these two big honking smallmouths, next time we wiil win". After the weigh in she started playing with the other kids (catching toads) and enjoying the weigh in process. This was the perfect tournament to start her with and Rich and his family were the perfect hosts. While we finished 5th with a disappointing 6 pounds. The day was a huge win. The team of Barry and Jared Buccarelli won with a very nice bag over 18 pounds, despite coming in early to get out of the weather. When we left Cierra was quick to mention all the fun she had, and the good friends we had made, and then commented on how tiring tournament fishing was. MInutes later she was asleep. Finally, I had made a good decision about fishing.
She has told me she will be ready when the regionals come to St. Clair, and "after we win the boat we are going to Disney world, so dad, you have to find a better spot". Sounds easy to me!
The next Fishers Of Men tournament will be July 26th on Cass lake out. This is a great team tournament series and I hope to see you at the next event .For more information visit www.mifom.com or contact John Carter 313-386-9469 |
